MOVIE REVIEW: P/S I Love You
This is a story of a young woman (Hilary Swank) who lost her husband (Gerard Butler) to the Grim Reaper while they were still adjusting to their newly married lives. Distraught with grief over the sudden lost, she was nonetheless guided on the road to recovery by an elaborate plan, courtesy of her late husband. Apparently, he was one of those clairvoyants who somehow knew when his 'visa' was going to expire and was thoughtful enough to make sure his wife is able to carry on with life after his death. And he did it similarly to how the folks do it in The Amazing Race: via instruction-filled letters. The only difference? Each clue ends with 'P/S: I Love You.'
Hang on a second. Gerard Butler in a romantic lead? *chuckle* The fierce 8-pack-sporting Spartan going all mushy in the name of love? LOL. Perhaps it's not such a far-fetched notion after all. Not when the female lead is played by the Million Dollar Baby with Spartan-like abs, Hilary Swank. Herein lies the main weakness of the movie: mis-casting.
Ok, many gals would still love this movie. But Gerard Butler convinced nobody as the laidback Irish singer dude with the funny, not-quite-so-Irish accent, who fell for Hilary Swank's American bohemian chick. Now I've always been a sucker for romantic movies but the chemistry between the leads is as sizzling as a barbecue on a rainy day. Hilary Swank just does not project a sense of vulnerability as well as actresses such as Meg Ryan/Jennifer Connelly/Demi Moore do. Apart from a few 'aww-you-poor-baby' moments,I still found it incredibly tough to believe she was actually grieving for her lost love. All the more a pity as the movie could have been much more poignant with the right casting and more inspired direction from a master director.
P/S: I rate this movie a 7 out of 10. Go rent 'The English Patient' or 'Ghost'.

C string anyone?
C String anyone? Just when we thought G string was the sexiest thong on earth, this new invention was introduced to mankind! C string, originated from Arizona, is a thong with no strings and with minimum coverage. Can be your typical underwear or a matching bottom for your bikini. Could this skimpy lingerie be the next big thing?
I am a lingerie lover. G string to t string to pearl thong. You name it. I have tried it all. But as adventurous as i can be when it comes to sexy lingerie, this c string is something i just have to pass. It does not seem to give me much support. Won't it slip? Imagine the horror and HUGE embarrassment if this panty came right off, when you were out shopping in your minis? OH GOD!
What's more, it is just too obscene and revealing to be worn as a bikini suit. Singapore as well as many other Asian countries are still conservative and backward when it comes to fashion. Definitely a style not well received by us here.
A NO NO for me.
P.s: check out the website -> http://www.cstringdirect.com/ if you would like to learn more about it. Apologise for the near-nude photo.

A long while later, the 2 celebrities approached the exit doors. Look how cheerful they seem. Must have been a very fulfilling and rewarding trip. Have never seen them glow as much as today. Welcome back all! We miss you!
Hanging out with my family!
Take a look at their safe haven. Renovated by my cousin himself. He is a professional interior designer. Let me know if you are keen to have your place transformed into a magical home. :)
Dinner and breakfast, prepared by Kak Ani. She is gifted when it comes to cooking. Yummy yummy!
The night would not be complete without a mediterranean touch: Sheesha! I tried a few puffs. Hated the taste. The first and last attempt for me.
Guys will be guys!

Do Malay students lack motivation?

What I meant by 'real' is that I did not know why I had to go to school. I went to school then because that's what everyone my age did. That was what my elder siblings had done when they were my age. Sure, I enjoyed school. But I could not wait to return home so I could spend time on my passion: drawing cartoons. I would doodle in front of the TV sketching characters from Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, Popeye, Mask, Transformers, etc. School to me was just something I had to do, a place to meet friends. Perhaps I was lucky enough to do well. Perhaps I am just competitive in nature though sibling rivalry did spur me to do better than my elder sisters. But as I got older, my motivation came from the desire to reward my mother for singlehandedly raising our family after my father died. She became my primary reason. That my elder sister dangled monetary reward for every distinction counted too I suppose.
It is clear that having a supportive family background helps. Knowing that your loved ones believe in you makes it so much easier to believe in yourself. This is the problem that many weaker students face: a lack of self-belief. They may have the mindset that they cannot possibly be better than their fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins who might have started working at blue collar jobs once they turned 16. It is also possible that these 'family members' choose to perpetuate this defeatist mentality among their 'juniors' in order to justify their own lack of success and validate career decisions they made earlier in life.
For a student to do well, he must find a way to self-motivate himself. Anything can be a motivator. Even a desire to impress a girl could be a good source of motivation. But I must admit it is hard to stay motivated when you keep running into failures. I failed a Maths test once in Primary 2. I cried because I was so embarassed. Embarassment could be a motivator. I haven't failed Maths since.
If failure is a stumbling block to building self-confidence and self-belief, I say stick with the things you are naturally gifted in. If you're good at sports, stay in sports. If you're good at computers, stick with it. A friend of mine failed his PSLE but found his calling in computers. Now he's earning mega bucks as a computer engineer.

Outing with Nadya & Baby
The only thing i hate about the place was the flies. Too many of them flying around that it distracted me from enjoying my food. Overall, it was satisfactory.
We moved on to take the bus to Changi Airport. It was Nadya's first time to actually see Terminal 3. So we took a quick browse and went on to take 858 back home. Along the way, Nadya gave me 2 Mathematical questions. See if you can answer both in 30sec:
Quiz 1: "There is a snail which wants to climb a 200m wall. Everyday, it will climb 10m, but when night falls, it will slip by 5m. How long does it take for the snail to reach the top of the wall?
Quiz 2: How do you cut a cake into 8 slices, with just 3 cuts
Happy trying!!

Losing your sense of identity? Who's fault is it??
Had a very fruiful discussion in class today. The topic of discussion "Malay students are most prone to losing their sense of purpose/identity in life." A heated debate that went on for 1.5hrs long!
My take on it: I believe this social problem doesnt limit itself to a particular race rather it affects all races in singapore. Perhaps, the issue is just more prevalent in our community, looking at the high number of school dropouts, fights etc. Just why is it that these kids, intelligent and kind in nature, just lose that urge to succeed/excel, all of a sudden? Is it their fault, the parents, the school or the society?
I believe no one is born bad or evil. The surrounding/environment one lives in shapes the person to being who he / she is today. In all, the home is the first avenue to mould an impressionable being into becoming a respectable individual. Parents play a critical part in building the right principles and values into their child, creating a humble yet condusive environment for the child to grow and develop mentally and emotionally. Just when do they cut their leash on their young, and let them roam free? From the recent Perihal Generasi programme on Suria, the distinguished speakers debated about the role of parents: should they dictate the educational stream of their children. Is this advisable? Will the motivation/ purpose to study still be as strong when these children merely fulfill the dying needs of their parents (to be in the shadow of their parents.. and to fulfill an unfulfilled dream of their parent's past? I believe that children should be given freedom of choice, when it comes to educational choices. I have students who merely go to school just to silence their parents, but zero motivation to learn. Similar cases for some of my friends: went into engineering instead of mass communication (result of parent's choice). A decision that led to poor results, gloomy future and a loss of their sense of self actualization.
Quoted from one of my student: Buat apa nak pergi sekolah cikgu. Saya nak belajar art tapi mak tak kasi amik the subject. Saya tak suka science. Pure science lagi!
-> Trust in the decision of your children. They know what their strengths are.
Now, what about the school? Do they impact on these children? I have heard of cases whereby the school forced the students to drop certain subjects, approaching the major cambridge exams, just so to boost their school ranking. This is plain selfish and inappropriate in my opinion. Some schools however, shape the curriculum in such a way that is so inflexible that is at the disadvantage of the students. For instance, one of my students complained to me that she was not allowed to do history and art (2 of her favourite subjects) as her school does not offer such a subject combi. I do understand that MOE strives to create the most competitive educational system in the world. But, not at the expense of the children's preferences. They could be more flexible as to allow the students to opt for one of the fixed subjects in the curriculum to be changed to one of their choice or even offer as elective. In this way, the students can follow the route you have in mind and yet pursue their dreams/ passion to learn more about a particular subject.
Just show how difficult it is to grasp the role of a parent and a teacher. A developer, motivator and facilitator to a child's well being for now and the future. To all teachers: I respect you. Like how the Buddhist would say, "teachers are the most dignified and noble occupation of all." And to all my teachers, Thank you for making me the person i am today.
Society to be blame? Partly. A community that strives to be on par with the rest. To have a better percentage of elite to lead the rest to a better beginning towards a brighter future. But the nature of our people is still stuck in the conservative, herd mentality stance. "Be a teacher. Work for the government. Go to the university and take this..." the list goes on. These are some of the common phrases we hear from our parents. What they see as safe, as secure, is what their children should enter into. Do not rock the boat! But why are we as a community think this way? Why cant we do something outside the norm? In this case, to pursue singing, acting etc if that is what we are passionate about? Not enough money to support the family? The dollar sign rules out all possibilities. Forget about your dreams. Just bring food to the table. Sigh.
The malay community in general is still backward in our mindset. This is a serious issue to ovresee. In 10, 20 or 100yrs, when the country moves forward, we will still be many many yrs back. So start now. Let your kids purse their passion in life. This gives them purpose and defines themselves as a person.
Love makes you blind, stupid and tone deaf!

Incident 1: Happened a few steps away from our tent. 2 young teenagers around the age of 19 - 21. The boy was a hopeless romantic. I didnt have such a sweet valentine's day arrangement at that age. Sigh kids nowadays! Anyway, he set the mood right: have a mat on the ground, some bubbles to quench her thirst, flowers and tasty snacks (i do not think she eats anything looking at her really small frame). All was fine by me UNTIL the action begins. The couple started to kiss. Light pecks in the beginning. And then, things got heated up. One wet kiss after another.. french kiss "LIVE" demonstration everybody. It didnt stop there. Has hands began to explore her curves... her legs found a home on his thighs... can you put these into a clear picture? Imagine my disgust. Get a room kids! Yucks.. not that i disagree to public display.. but this was just too vivid for me.
Love, in this case, blinds you from the rest of the world. You have created your own bermuda triangle: unwary of your surroundings and unconcern about what others might say or think. In other words, we are invisible in your eyes.
Incident 2: A funny one. About a malay couple, mid 20s i would guess. Tent was built next to the main pavement. The flap opened, and 2 pairs of legs could be seen. Relaxed and just chilling together. A candle was lit in the tent to create that rustic alluring feeling. One problem, he should have placed the candle on his opposite side rather than next to him. (This is when you appreciate your science knowledge...) Effect of this -> Clear silloutte of the couple. Visible for all to see, how he was enjoying his soft caress on her supple breasts!!! Haha... The "wayang kulit effect" as my baby would put it. I am so glad i am with a genius, definitely will not happen to us... hehe
Love, definitely stupidified (if there is such a word) you. Lust takes over and all you care about is to get your inner desires fulfilled in anyway possible.
Incident 3: Saw a middle age couple walking hand in hand. An "aww" moment for me. Amused to see just how they keep it going after many years of marriage. True love, i must say. But just when i was in a daze, full of hope and dreams for my future marriage, a loud BANG filled the air. Not the sound of a gun shot nor a balloon burst. But the burst of air from his backside. Baby and i tried hard to contain our laughter but to no avail. He did not let go once. twice but THREE times of human "air emission!!" Haha... the wife behaved as per normal. No reaction whatsoever.
Nevertheless, love, not only does it lessen your hearing capability, it moulds a person to accept the good and bad that comes with the person one loves (quoted from Lilin, the ambassador of Soo Kee jewellery).
Above all, everyone has their own picture of a perfect Valentine(whatever that maybe).

Valentine's day special
Valentine's Day, 14th Of February 2008.A memorable day for all couples, worldwide. Some couples prefer to dine at fancy restaurants, some rather watch a romantic movie together ... the list just goes on. What we see as a mundane, everyday activity, may be seen as romantic and sweet to others. So to all couples I wish you Happy Valentine's Day!
My baby had a different idea in mind to celebrate the moment. "Dinner by the Beach? he asked. Changi Beach was our choice. Reason being, that particular beach was the first place we had our romantic evening together as a couple. And to avoid all those overpriced eateries and congested malls/cineplexes.
Time of arrival: 7pm.
Dinner: Nasi lemak with otah-otah (my favourite. And it was our first meal together as a couple on the 21st nov '07)
We chose our auspicious location. Setup the tent, with my help of course. ;) (Felt like one of the guys last night. hehe...) We had to get the tent up despite the strong winds... imagine the difficulty. When all was done, it was snap snap time! Took pics of our beautiful red tent, the delicious food and definitely, US! Didnt see the sunset from where we were. But we could witness the beautiful seasights, huge planes above us and the other couples who were just snuggling in the arms of the lovers. It was magical. With the serenading sounds of the waves, the music from our Sony Ericsson phone, we just talked and cuddle in each other's arms all night.
We made plans for the future... and share our hopes and dreams.
I love you, sayang. I never want this to end. You are my everything, my love and my soul. I thank you for everyday spent with you is a blessing.
(P.S: A unfortunate thing happened today. The pictures we took failed to get transfered to my laptop. Deleted all the pics in my cam earlier. AND so, i loSt all those pics taken last night! )
Tribute to our national icon, Ah Meng
Ah Meng, Singapore Zoo’s most famous and well-loved orang utan, passed away on 8 February 2008 due to old age. She was 48 years old.
Born in Sumatra, Indonesia around 1960, Ah Meng came to the Zoo at the approximate age of seven in 1971 when she was confiscated from the Chinese family who had kept her as an illegal pet. In 1982, the Zoo introduced ‘Breakfast with an Orang Utan’ programme and Ah Meng was the star. She shot to fame instantly and became a celebrity both at home an overseas. By 1986, she had featured in almost 30 travel films and had appeared in more than 270 articles in newspapers and travel magazines.
For her outstanding performances, Ah Meng is the first and only non-human recipient of the ‘Special Tourism Ambassador’ award conferred by the then Singapore Tourism Promotion Board in 1992. As an icon for the Zoo, Ah Meng has met numerous foreign dignitaries and celebrities such as Prince Philip, Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor.
She will be remembered by us all. She has touched many hearts and will continue to even in her absence. May the next generation lives to continue her legacy
From us to you;
"We mourn the passing of Ah Meng. She has touched the hearts of everyone who has met her and contributed immensely in helping promote awareness of how each and every one of us can play a role in anti-poaching, anti-deforestation and conservation matters. We will miss her dearly," said Ms Fanny Lai, Group CEO of Wildlife Reserves Singapore.
Added Alagappasamy s/o Chellaiyah (also known as Sam), Curator, Singapore Zoo, "I have taken care of Ah Meng since she first came to the Zoo. Her departure makes me extremely sad and it will take a long while for me to adjust to not having her around. On the other hand, I am very happy that I have had the opportunity to take care of Ah Meng and her family all these years."
We LOVE you!

A wonderful Sunday!
OK enough negativity. Today was a good day. I spent it with my beloved boyfren and my good frens, Jun and Maya.
The day started early, 7am to be exact.
7am, Sunday morning: Got up, could not sleep the whole night. Too excited to start my Sunday. Haha..
730am: Prepared the ingredients for today's lunch. Menu for the day:
a) Rice
b) Oyster sauce vegetables (with shallots and carrots. Yummy)
c) Sambal Potato (a little too spicy today..hehe.. opps)
9am: Packed the food into 2 separate containers. Lunch for my brother and baby to bring to work.
930am: Prepared breakfast for baby and brother. Pancakes with honey and a cup of hot chocolate.
1030am: Headed down to baby's place. A surprise breakfast for him. He was pleasantly surprised by the gesture. No one had done it before, he said. I was really glad to be the first to do so. Hate to see him gorge down those outside food. Too much MSG! N a waste of money.. Haha..
-> Sent him to the train station. Said our goodbyes. :( Miss you already honey.
But the day did not end there. Met my besties for lunch at Mad Jack, Jalan Kayu. They have great fish n chips. DO NOT try the salmon with cream sauce tho. It Sux! Jun can vouch for that... hehe..
The plan was for the 3 of us to head down to Sembawang Park. But our poor ol Jun was down with a bad flu. So only 2 of us. Had the best conversation ever. About relationships, marriage phobia, societal issues etc.
To Maya-> Don't worry gal. Things will fall into place soon. Just be patient ok.. mayb use those suggestions i offered. Fall in love once again. ;)
Now, am home. And down with fever, Jun!!!! You must have passed ur virus to me! Oritey.. time for me to rest. Tata!

Lunch @ Hyatt

Had the most superb lunch at The Grand Hyatt last Saturday. Thanks to my favourite aunt of all, Mak Ngah! No reason whatsoever... no birthdays. Just perhaps a farewell lunch before she departs to the holy land this coming Monday. My family (comprised of my mum, stepdad and myself. Poor thing, my brother could not make it. He has to work. What a waste!) and that of my aunt's (my 2 cousins came along.. my cousin was the biggest eater for the day).
The mature adults (couldn't say they are old.. haha) enjoyed the huge variety that the restaurant offered. A wide range of delicacies from North Indian to Malay to Chinese! Just name it! Delicious. My cousin had 6 pieces of barbecued stingrays! Can you imagine that! haha.. I had mostly the indian dishes especially the aloo gobi, naan and chicken curry.
Otak otak was amazingly nice. Not to mention the cookies -> chinese new year came early. Pineapple tarts were made for all the guests.Really yummy. Muah chee, kuih dadar, goreng pisang.. wow.. too much to say. The food was overall the best ever. Total bill: $274 for 6 of us. Not really expensive considering the variety and the venue.
Definitely will go again! Kinda miss the food now. Was so full after the buffet, all we could think about was SLEEP! hehe... to all my frens, I highly recommend this place!!! GO FOR IT SOON!
