MOVIE REVIEW: P/S I Love You

Here's the take from a guy who loves watching movies..

This is a story of a young woman (Hilary Swank) who lost her husband (Gerard Butler) to the Grim Reaper while they were still adjusting to their newly married lives. Distraught with grief over the sudden lost, she was nonetheless guided on the road to recovery by an elaborate plan, courtesy of her late husband. Apparently, he was one of those clairvoyants who somehow knew when his 'visa' was going to expire and was thoughtful enough to make sure his wife is able to carry on with life after his death. And he did it similarly to how the folks do it in The Amazing Race: via instruction-filled letters. The only difference? Each clue ends with 'P/S: I Love You.'

Hang on a second. Gerard Butler in a romantic lead? *chuckle* The fierce 8-pack-sporting Spartan going all mushy in the name of love? LOL. Perhaps it's not such a far-fetched notion after all. Not when the female lead is played by the Million Dollar Baby with Spartan-like abs, Hilary Swank. Herein lies the main weakness of the movie: mis-casting.

Ok, many gals would still love this movie. But Gerard Butler convinced nobody as the laidback Irish singer dude with the funny, not-quite-so-Irish accent, who fell for Hilary Swank's American bohemian chick. Now I've always been a sucker for romantic movies but the chemistry between the leads is as sizzling as a barbecue on a rainy day. Hilary Swank just does not project a sense of vulnerability as well as actresses such as Meg Ryan/Jennifer Connelly/Demi Moore do. Apart from a few 'aww-you-poor-baby' moments,I still found it incredibly tough to believe she was actually grieving for her lost love. All the more a pity as the movie could have been much more poignant with the right casting and more inspired direction from a master director.

P/S: I rate this movie a 7 out of 10. Go rent 'The English Patient' or 'Ghost'.
